Kilsyth Cobras edging clear

KILSYTH has widened the gap between itself and the Ballarat Lady Miners in the SEABL women's standings with a 101-75 win on Saturday night.

The fourth-placed Lady Cobras are three wins clear of Ballarat as the top four starts to break away from the rest of the competition.

The Lady Cobras scored more than 100 points, for the first time this season, in the 26-point win.

They also had six players reach double-figures, with Gemma Kerr piling-on a game-high 23 points, with 12 coming from three-point range.

The Lady Cobras hit the front for good, late in the first quarter, on the back of a Kerr three-pointer.

The visitors led by five points at quarter-time, which was extended to nine at the main break with Desiree Glaubitz (19 points and 10 assists) instrumental.

Clare Papavs (17 points) and Erica McMenamin (10 points and five assists) helped the Lady Cobras build a 21-point advantage by the final break.

Meanwhile, Kilsyth's men suffered a 98-92 overtime loss to Canberra on the road on Saturday night.

Gerard Leonard (21 points), Joe Werner (19 points) and Jon Croft (18 points) led the scoring as the Cobras established a four-point half-time lead.

Scores were tied, 79-all, at the final buzzer, but Canberra sealed victory with 19-13 in overtime.

In other basketball news, the Kilsyth Cobras will play an exhibition match against Nicholls State University, from Louisiana, on May 20. The match starts at 7.30pm.

And, two Kilsyth rising stars were recently selected for Victoria Metro squads for the National Championships in July.

Rebecca O'Donnell secured a place in the under-16 team, which will travel to Kalamunda in WA, while Kate Ebzery was named a reserve in the under-18 side that will compete in Ballarat.
